"LSAMP provided me with a community that understands not just the scientific challenges, but also the unique struggles faced by underrepresented minorities."
Wendy Deras, Biology major, Class of 2024
Meet Wendy Deras
In the ever-evolving landscape of STEM, Wendy Deras stands as a testament to the transformative power of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). Her journey, from seeking resources for grad school to overcoming imposter syndrome, paints a vivid picture of the impact LSAMP has on historically underrepresented minority students in the scientific realm.
Breaking Down LSAMP:
Firstly, Wendy sheds light on LSAMP. "LSAMP is a program funded by the National
Science Foundation that supports minorities in STEM." It's not just a program; it's
a comprehensive experience that funds undergraduate research, providing a
crucial support system focused on empowering minority voices in the scientific
community.
On What Motivated Her:
Wendy's motivation to join LSAMP stems from a need for resources and a network
crucial for navigating the path toward grad school, particularly pursuing a Ph.D. or an M.D., Ph.D. program. "I joined the program to get a better network of people."
Feeling the lack of a relatable network in her STEM journey, LSAMP became the
connection for her with like-minded individuals, creating a supportive community.
The Significance of LSAMP Research:
Engaging in LSAMP research, Wendy highlights the importance of her work. As an
LSAMP scholar, her research is a constant reminder of its importance. "I know that the research that I'm actually doing is important because I'm working with people that are important, and I'm constantly reminded that the work that I'm doing is
important." Beyond scientific discoveries, LSAMP research projects serve as a
testament to the impact individuals can make when given the right resources and
support.
Lessons Learned with LSAMP:
One of the most significant takeaways from Wendy's LSAMP experience is learning how to communicate science effectively. "I have learned how to communicate science, which is really important in the field that you're going into because Ph.D. and M.D. programs require you to have great communication skills, and that's something that's not really taught in a classroom." LSAMP's mentorship program not only provided academic guidance but also equipped her with the crucial skill of articulating complex scientific concepts, a skill often overlooked in traditional classroom settings. Moreover, LSAMP acted as a catalyst in helping Wendy overcome imposter syndrome prevalent in STEM. "It has also given me the confidence of overcoming imposter syndrome in STEM, because I know so many people now that are not only going through the same things that I'm going through, but are also Hispanics in science or African-Americans in science. And that allows you to feel more secure in what you're doing."
Wendy’s Future Aspirations:
Wendy emphasizes how LSAMP has already played a role in shaping her future career goals. The program has provided her with essential resources and mentorship, paving the way for her application to Ph.D. programs. "It has given me the communication skills to be able to incorporate all of these things into writing my resume and writing my personal statement." Wendy acknowledges the role LSAMP has played in crafting recommendation letters, enhancing communication skills, and refining her resume—a testament to the program's holistic impact on her academic and professional journey.
Advice for Aspiring LSAMP Participants:
For those considering the LSAMP journey, Wendy offers sage advice. She underscores the importance of experiencing the program firsthand, highlighting that true understanding and fit can only be gauged through active participation. "My advice to you is that you are not going to know if something is good for you until you actually do it." LSAMP not only provides an opportunity to explore different facets of STEM but also allows individuals to discover their niche and passion within the scientific landscape.
LSAMP’s Impact:
In concluding her reflections, Wendy recommends LSAMP to aspiring scientists. Her endorsement is not just a testament to her personal success but a reflection of diversity and inclusion in STEM. "I 100% recommend LSAMP. I think it's impacted not only the way that I see myself in science, but also the way other people see me. So yeah, I totally recommend it." LSAMP, in Wendy's eyes, is not just a program; it is a transformative force shaping not only the way she perceives herself in science but also how others view her.
